Live updates from Nick Saban after 2023 A-Day
The 2023 Alabama A-Day Game is officially in the books and Nick Saban broke things down in the postgame interview room.
A taste of his comments in the aftermath of the final spring practice of the year…
— “All in all, I think we had a good spring,” Saban opened by saying. Saban said he likes the energy and spirit of this group.
— Saban said they had too many drops, INTs, etc. Too many mental errors but he said it wasn’t all negative.
— A lot of young guys played today but Saban said the experience gained will help a lot.
— “I like this team,” Saban said.
— On having QBs returning, he said those two have an advantage through their experience in the system. Everybody is still competing.
— “I like this team’s toughness,” Saban said. There aren’t “soft players” and they have a better practice mentality than in recent years.
— Both freshman QBs made a lot of progress. Dylan Lonergan “has a little more poise” in the position while noting Eli Holstein is making progress.
— Processing the defense, and getting a pre-read of the scheme is the first step for the QBs as they compete. They need to have a plan before the snap and not drift in the pocket. He likes the athleticism of both Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson. At the same time, they need to work through the progression to distribute the ball to playmakers.
— Malachi Moore “is a very instinctive player,” Saban said of the veteran DB who made a few sacks from the safety position.
— RB Justice Haynes is a mature player. “Nothing is too big for him,” Saban said. You wouldn’t know he was a freshman if you didn’t see it on the roster. Said he has a bright future and will have a role this season.
— Saban said they need better attention to detail in route running and more chemistry between QBs and WRs.
