Playoff roundup: Scores, highlights from Saturday’s games
Mytch Deacy pitched out of a two-on, no-out jam in the seventh inning and No. 6 Spanish Fort held off McAdory 7-5 in Game 3 of their best-of-three Class 6A playoff series.
The Toros (22-14) advance to face No. 10 Northridge next week.
Trailing 7-4 entering the top of the seventh, the first two Yellow Jackets reached on a single and an error. Deacy induced a lineout and then struck out Paul McKenzie for the second out. After an infield error allowed McAdory to score a run, Deacy struck out Aaron Bailey on three pitches to end the game.
McAdory finished at 18-10.
Spanish Fort scored three runs in the bottom of the first, then added a single run in the third, two in the fifth and another in the sixth. McAdory tied the game twice – once at 3-3 in the top of the third and again at 4-4 in the top of the fifth, but the Toros reclaimed the lead in the bottom half each time.
Pierce Dutton and DJ Eurgil each had two hits. Lakelon Ray and Grant Howard each had two RBIs for Spanish Fort. Deacy got the win with four innings in relief of Eurgil. Deacy allowed two runs on two hits and struck out six.
Sawyer Pearsall and Braden Mowery each had two hits for McAdory.
CLASS 5A
Holtville 12, Mobile Christian 6
No. 10 Holtville eliminated No. 8 Mobile Christian in Game 3 of their best-of-three series.
The Bulldogs scored in every inning – two in the first, three in the second, single runs in the third and fourth, four more in the fifth and another in the sixth. The Leopards, who moved up after winning the last two Class 4A titles, never led.
Sam Silas was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Holtville. Drey Barrett was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Lane Talley also drove in two runs. Barrett went the distance on the mound, allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out eight.
Each of the three Mobile Christian pitchers gave up at least three runs. Walker Seaman, the starter, took the loss.
Southern Miss signee Seth Smith was 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. Noah Blackburn had two hits and three RBIs.
Holtville moves on to play Elmore County next week in Round 2.
CLASS 4A
UMS-Wright 11, Munford 1
Will Taylor went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored as UMS-Wright won Game 3 at Munford.
The Bulldogs (21-11) entered the best-of-three series ranked No. 6 in the final Alabama Sports Writers Association rankings of the season. Munford (20-7) was No. 8.
UMS took control of the deciding game early, scoring six runs in the top of the sixth and never looking back. The Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits against three Munford pitchers.
Sutton Snypes homered for UMS. Logan Norris and Parker Barraza were both 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Starter Jake Jaye pitched five innings to get the win, scattering five hits and striking out three. Olin Ward pitched the sixth, striking out two.
Mason Brewer had two hits for Munford.
UMS will face Geneva in Round 2 net week.
CLASS 2A
St. Luke’s 18, Horseshoe Bend 13
Cooper Frampton drove in four runs on three hits Saturday as St. Luke’s advanced to the second round. The Wildcats (14-13) will play Wicksburg next week.
Trailing 6-0 after the first two innings, St. Luke’s rallied for eight runs in the third and six runs in the fourth. They added two more in the sixth and a single run in the seventh. The Wildcats finished with 15 hits, though they were charged with five errors.
Bryce McLemore drove in three runs and walked three times. Kyle Eddington, Jeremy Menhennett and Will Spivey each drove in two. St. Luke’s used four pitchers with the second, Menhennett, getting the win.
Charlie Shivers had two hits and two RBIs for Horseshoe Bend. The Generals used six pitchers.
