Pitching carries Saraland past Brookwood in 6A playoffs

Clutch pitching by Bryson Goff and Evan Hilliard helped give host Saraland a sweep over Brookwood in the opening round of the Class 6A baseball playoffs on Friday night.

In Game 1, which was won by the Spartans 3-1, Goff pitched a complete game, allowing one run and three hits while walking three and striking out seven. Hitting wise, Brooks Womble was 1-for-3, while Jameson Curtis had an RBI single and Mike Smith, Brodie Lloyd and Santae McWilliams scored runs.

Chase Nichols took the loss for Brookwood, pitching a complete game while allowing three runs — one earned — and six hits while striking out five and walking one. Chase Jones was 2-for-3 and Ryken Wetzel scored a run.

Saraland (24-8) went up 3-0 in the second when Smith scored on a passed ball, Curtis’ RBI single scored Lloyd and McWilliams scored on a double steal. Brookwood scored in the fourth when Wetzel scored on an error following a Jacob Nations’ grounder. The Panthers had runners on second and third with two outs, but Goff worked his way out of the jam and handcuffed Brookwood batters the rest of the way.

Hilliard was just as effective in Game 2, striking out seven and allowing one run and six hits while pitching a complete game. McWilliams was 1-for-3 and scored a run, Womble was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Bryson Goff had an RBI single.

Nations, who pitched for Brookwood in Game 2, also had a complete game, allowing three runs and six hits while striking out five. Nations was also 1-for-2 at the plate, while Kobie Humphries had an RBI double for the Panthers.

Womble doubled in McWilliams and scored on Goff’s single in the first to put the Spartans up 2-0. Brookwood cut the lead in half on Humphries’ RBI double. But Hilliard prevented the Panthers’ bats from generating any more offense.

“I thought Bryson Goff was outstanding in Game 1,” said Saraland head coach Brett Boutwell. “The kid’s been pitching here for four years, and he’s an unbelievable competitor. Evan’s such a calm, collected kid and just watching him on the mound as the game goes on gives you mounds of confidence.”

Saraland travels to play Helena in Round 2 of the Class 6A playoffs.
