Woman shot inside north Birmingham apartment Friday; no suspects in custody

Birmingham police are investigating a shooting after a woman was hit by gunfire early Friday evening inside an apartment in the northern part of the city.

Police received a ShotSpotter report indicating that shots were fired around 5:20 p.m. Friday in the 2300 block of 20th Avenue North, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

Officers happened to be patrolling in the area at the time when residents flagged an officer and stated a person was shot inside an apartment, said Fitzgerald.

Police made contact with an adult female who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service took the woman to UAB Hospital. She is expected to survive.

Multiple vehicles were also shot into during the incident.

Fitzgerald said the shooter and the victim knew each other, and while the shooter hasn’t been detained “we’re hoping that we can get this person into custody.”

The officer implored residents who witnessed or heard information on the incident to call police at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
