Alabama A-Day rosters released: Jalen Milroe to lead first-team offense

Third-year quarterback Jalen Milroe will lead Alabama’s White team in Saturday’s spring game, which consists mostly of expected first-team offensive players and expected second-team defensive players.

Second-year quarterback Ty Simpson was included on the Crimson team for the A-Day scrimmage, joining a group of expected second-team offensive players and first-team defensive players.

Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is part of the coaching staff for the White team, along with offensive line coach Eric Wolford. Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is also part of the White team staff.

However, as the spring portion of Alabama’s starting quarterback competition concludes, Nick Saban cautioned Thursday against reading too much into the spring game rosters.

“We split up the squads in A-Day so we get maximum reps for most of the players, which does not really mean the entire first team is on one team and the entire first team is on the other team,” he said. “It means if we have certain guys at certain positions, we can manipulate them around to get reps for those guys by playing more of the game because we split the squads up that way, then that’s the way we do it.

“We have where we try to play the first teams against the first teams, and the second teams against the second teams, so it’s a competitive game.”

Saban said Thursday there will be “quite a few guys who won’t participate in this game” because of injuries, but did not list those players. Outside linebackers Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell; inside linebacker Deontae Lawson; tight end Robbie Ouzts and defensive lineman Jah-Marien Latham are not listed on the spring game roster, indicating they are out because of injury. Suspended defensive back Tony Mitchell is also not listed.
