North Alabama spring roundup: Sparkman baseball wins area title

Thursday was a big day for the Sparkman baseball program as the Senators swept Albertville to wrap up the Class 7A Area 7 championship and deliver head coach Jason Brewer his 100th career win. Sparkman rolled by the Aggies 29-4 and 8-0 in the home double-header.

In the runaway Game 1 win, Easton Henderson, who was 2-for-3, and Evan Nelson drove in three runs apiece for the Senators. Jack Buening and Luke Jones, who tripled, went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs each. Izzy Parker was 2-for-2 with one run batted in.

Cade Collins picked up the win, allowing no runs over 2.1 innings. He gave up two hits and walked one.

In Game 2, Ryan Everly struck out four Aggies and walked three, allowing one hit over three innings.

Garrett Mullens doubled and drove in two runs for the Senators. Tre Aguon went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Hartselle 2, Decatur 1: Junior Jack Adams scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Alex Hatfield with eight seconds left in the match on the road on Thursday, earning the Tigers the Class 6A Area 14 title. Hartselle needed to win and score at least two goals to break a tie with Cullman for the championship.

Ethan Medendorp scored the first goal for the Tigers off an assist from Jamison Hill.

Hartselle improved to 19-3-2 on the year and will host the first round of the playoffs at a date and time to be determined.

On Tuesday, Hartselle beat Cullman 1-0 at home to split the season series. Owen Bennich scored the game-winner with a great move off a ball played up the sideline by Hill with eight minutes remaining.

Keeper Nick Vaughn recorded his eighth shutout of the season.

GIRLS

SOCCER

Randolph 11, Scottsboro 0: Senior Sarah Kate Mitchell scored four goals to get the 100th in her career as Randolph ran past Scottsboro on Senior Night. Mitchell also had an assist in the win that gave the Raiders an 8-3-1 record on the season.

Senior Madison DeOrio scored twice in the win and senior Norah Connell had one goal. Sophomore Ellie Ward scored once and had an assist. Freshmen Hope Falkenberg, Jane Connell and Anne Fowlkes Schreeder all scored goals and Falkenberg had an assist.

The Raiders had 30 shots on goal and prevented Scottsboro from having any.

SOFTBALL

Madison Academy 6, Danville 1: Seventh-ranked Class 3A Madison Academy pushed its record to 14-4 on the year with the win in eight innings at Danville on Tuesday.

Emily Burgreen went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run for the Mustangs. Rachael Andrews was 2-for-4 and Memphis Houston went 2-for-3.

Cat Schreiber struck out 10 over eight innings to get the win.

On Monday, New Hope beat the Mustangs 7-5. Schreiber went 4-for-4 with an RBI and Andrews was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Ryan McBride went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

Schreiber gave up one earned run and struck out six for Madison Academy.

Hazel Green 12, Madison County 2: The ninth-ranked Class 6A Trojans out-hit 4A Madison County 13-5 on the way to the road win on Monday with five doubles on the day. Hazel Green improved to 22-15-1 on the year.

Hazel Green got doubles from Mason Quinnie, Mackenzie Bowling, Allie Cole, Mariah Bazile and Sarah Snowden. Quinnie was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Bowling was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cole went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Bazile was 1-for-2 with three runs scored. Snowden was 1-for-1 with a run scored. Briley Zimmerman was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Kailey Hyatt got the complete-game win, allowing two earned runs on five hits.

Marion Gamble took the loss for Madison County, giving up four earned runs on six hits over three innings.

Allison Yeary doubled for the Tigers. Sydney Gurley, Anna Sanders, Aubrey Shaddix and Gracyn Spicer all singled in the loss.

On Thursday, the Trojans beat Grissom 13-1 on the road, scoring five runs in the fifth inning and six more in the seventh.

Bazile went 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored for Hazel Green. Payton Pike was 4-for-4 with an RBI. Quinnie and Cole had two hits each. Cole had a double and drove in two runs. Bowling also doubled for the Trojans.

Quinnie picked up the win in the circle, allowing no runs on three hits over six innings. She struck out four and walked one.
