Arrest made in 8-year-old Baldwin County murder case
Nearly eight years after Devon Deshon Kennedy’s body was found in a vehicle in the Lillian community in southeast Alabama, investigators have made an arrest in the case.
The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that 32-year-old Decody Darnell Herring has been charged with Kennedy’s murder.
Kennedy was reported missing from Pensacola on Nov. 14, 2015 and his body found one day later in Lillian. Multiple suspects were developed at the time, according to investigators, but there was not enough evidence to warrant an arrest.
“Eventually, all of our investigative leads were exhausted,” the sheriff’s office said in a release. “The case remained open but became cold.”
In recent months, however, new information brought the Kennedy murder back into focus. The new information, coupled with the evidence initially gathered in 2015, led to Herring’s arrest.
Herring was booked into the Baldwin County Jail, where he remains without bond.
“Re-opening a cold case requires patience, diligence and teamwork,” according to the BCSO. “We want to thank our victim’s family for their patience and our partners with the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office for their continued support in this matter.”
The sheriff’s office emphasized the case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lt. Andy Ashton at 251-972-6872.
