Baker star, Mr. Basketball Labaron Philon decommits from Auburn’s 2024 class
Auburn basketball has lost a commitment from its 2024 recruiting class for the second time in the last week.
Baker star Labaron Philon, who was recently crowned the state’s Mr. Basketball, backed off his commitment from Auburn on Friday morning. Philon’s decommitment comes one week after 2024 big man Peyton Marshall did the same.

“First off, I would like to thank Bruce Pearl, his staff and fans for recruiting me along this journey,” Philon said in a post on Instagram. “After news of changes in the program and staff, me and my family have to think about my future. With that being said, I would like to re-open my recruitment. Truly and extremely blessed to be recruited by the Auburn family! Can’t thank you guys enough.”
The recent staff changes that Philon, like Marshall a week earlier, cited was the departure of assistant coach Wes Flanigan. After spending the last five seasons working under Bruce Pearl, Flanigan left the program earlier this month and is expected to join Chris Beard’s inaugural staff at Ole Miss, a source told AL.com on April 8. Flanigan was Philon’s primary recruiter at Auburn, and the two formed a strong relationship during the latter’s recruitment.
Philon originally committed to Auburn on Feb. 3, picking the Tigers over Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Kansas and Tennessee. A 6-foot-4 combo guard, Philon is a four-star prospect out of Mobile who is rated as the No. 1 player in Alabama and the No. 41 overall recruit in the 2024 class. As a junior at Baker, he averaged 35 points, six rebounds and four assists per game and finished the season with 1,075 points. He has scored 2,334 points during his high school career, with still a year to add to it.
Philon became the sixth underclassman in state history to win Mr. Basketball, and he was also named the Class 7A Player of the Year. He was set to be the first Mr. Basketball winner from the state to ever sign with Auburn.
His decision to re-open his recruitment leaves Auburn with one commitment in the 2024 class: five-star guard Tahaad Pettiford. The Tigers’ class, which was ranked third in the country, is now seventh in that cycle according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings.
