Alabama NFL roundup: Quinnen Williams sacks Packers

When the Jets defeated the Miami Dolphins 40-17 last week, it marked the first time since Quinnen Williams joined New York as the third selection in the 2019 NFL Draft that the team had a record better than .500.

That victory boosted the Jets’ record to 3-2 in 2022, and Williams helped make sure New York didn’t fall back to .500 on Sunday.

In the Jets’ 27-10 victory over the Green Bay Packers, the defensive tackle made five tackles, recorded two sacks, had two tackles for loss, registered three quarterback hits, forced a fumble and blocked a field-goal attempt.

“He’s playing at a different level,” New York coach Robert Saleh said. “Obviously, we’re only six games in, so he’s got to continue. We’ve got 11 more left. But he keeps doing this, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be Pro Bowl, All-Pro, all the different accolades you can get. He’s playing at that type of level.”

In the third two-sack game of his career, Williams became the first New York player to register at least one-half sack in five consecutive games since 2013.

“It’s no Quinnen Williams making these plays if it won’t for (linebacker) C.J. (Mosley) making the calls,” Williams said, “if it won’t for (defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins) relaying the calls, if it won’t for (defensive end) Bryce (Huff) rushing the edge – it’s all a defensive effort. It’s never just 95 on that field. It’s never one versus 11. It’s the whole defense. Without my brothers on that field, I wouldn’t be where I am. And without me on that field doing the things, I don’t think they would be who they is, so we all in a collective thing.”

Williams blocked a 47-yard field-goal attempt by Mason Crosby on the first play of the second quarter to keep the game scoreless.

The former Wenonah High School star had a strip-sack of Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the first quarter, but the Packers recovered the loose football.

The Jets are 4-2 for the first time since 2015. They haven’t been 5-2 since 2010. After winning at Lambeau Field, New York stays on the road next week, visiting the Denver Broncos at 3:05 p.m. CDT on Sunday.
