Saban: Alabama has ‘opportunity to bring guys in’ after transfer portal losses
The spring carousel of college football players is already turning into motion with dozens of players entering their names into the transfer portal. The whirlwind hasn’t avoided Tuscaloosa, either.
Four days into the 15-day period, three different Alabama players have stated their desire to leave the program: defensive backs Trequon Fegans and Jahquez Robinson and tight end Elijah Brown.
UA coach Nick Saban addressed their departures ahead of Alabama’s A-Day game. While Saban has said he likes the makeup of the team, he left open the possibility of adding to it.
“No, I mean, we don’t want anybody to get into the portal,” Saban said when asked if he had any message to a player on the roster considering leaving. “We’d love to keep everybody on our team on our team. I think sometimes … my experience with this is a little bit like free agency in the NFL. NFL players kind of know they’re expendable. I think some college players sometimes think the portal is a one-way street, but it’s really not, because we have an opportunity to bring guys in and replace them, too, if we choose to do that.
“We’d rather make it work with the guys that understand the culture in our program. But that’s just another, you know, resource that you look at players and see if there’s any way you can help the team and strengthen your roster.”
In the past, Alabama has utilized the transfer portal to seek immediate contributors. The Tide added running back Jahmyr Gibbs (Georgia Tech) and offensive lineman Tyler Steen (Vanderbilt) to the first-team offense along with uneven contributors like wide receivers Jermaine Burton (Georgia), Tyler Harrell (Louisville) and cornerback Eli Ricks (LSU) last year.
While its depth is clear in some areas like running back, other positions of need can arise during the weekend. Student-athletes have until April 30 to enter the portal. More are likely to announce their departures following Saturday’s spring scrimmage.
