Inmate who died in Donaldson Correctional Facility infirmary now identified

Authorities have released the name of a state inmate who died at William Donaldson Correctional Facility over the weekend.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the inmate as Donald Gerald Simmons. He was 69.

Simmons was found unresponsive at 8:07 p.m. Sunday in the infirmary where he was being treated for significant natural diseases, said Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:30 p.m.

A cause of death has not been determined but Yates said there was no evidence of trauma or foul play.

Simmons was serving a life sentence for robbery, rape and kidnapping from a 1986 conviction out of Mobile County.

An investigation is ongoing by the Alabama Department of Correction – Law Enforcement Services Division.
