Alabama-roots free agents sign NFL contracts on Monday

Two players with Alabama football roots who became free agents – but not unrestricted free agents – on March 15 signed NFL contracts on Monday.

A restricted free agent, safety Jeremy Reaves from South Alabama signed his one-year qualifying offer from the Washington Commanders.

An exclusive-rights free agent, cornerback Mike Jackson from Spain Park High School signed his offer to stay with the Seattle Seahawks.

The players signed their contracts as their teams started their offseason programs on Monday.

Washington placed a right-of-first-refusal tender on Reaves last month, which carries a salary of $2.627 million for the 2023 season. As a restricted free agent – a player with three accrued NFL seasons (at least six games on the active roster) and an expiring contract — Reaves could negotiate with any NFL team until Sunday. If Reaves had gotten a better contract offer, the Commanders had the option to match it.

Reaves was the special-teamer on the NFC Pro Bowl team and the first-team All-Pro special-teamer for the 2022 season.

Released five times since entering the NFL in 2018 as an undrafted rookie, Reaves had not made a regular-season roster coming out of the preseason until 2022.

Jackson was an exclusive-rights free agent as a player with fewer than three accrued NFL seasons and an expiring contract. If his original team offers the ERFA a contract, he cannot negotiate with any other teams.

Jackson’s new deal with the Seahawks was reported as a one-year, $940,000 contract.

Jackson entered the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick from Miami (Florida) in 2019. He’s been waived three times and traded once. Before the 2022 season, Jackson had played in four NFL regular-season games – one for the Detroit Lions in 2019, one for the New England Patriots in 2020 and two with Seattle in 2021.

But in 2022, Jackson started every game for the Seahawks. He played 1,082 defensive snaps as well as 77 special-teams plays.

In Seattle’s 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 18, Jackson scored his first NFL touchdown when he picked up a blocked field-goal attempt and ran 86 yards for a touchdown.
