Madison County inmate dies after being found unresponsive, sheriff’s office says

Madison County authorities said an inmate in the county jail died this afternoon.

Sheriff Kevin Turner said William Carlos Colbert, 53, was found unresponsive in his cell at about 11:22 a.m. following “a sudden medical emergency witnessed by other inmates.”

Medical staff and detention officers rendered medical aid, Turner said, until Colbert was transported to Huntsville Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Colbert had been in the jail since March 26, when he was taken into custody on probation violation charges.

Turner said in a statement that a preliminary death investigation has determined there was no indication of foul play or other suspicious circumstances.

The Alabama State Forensics Lab will perform an autopsy to verify the cause of death.

An investigation is continuing.
