Another retailer leaving this major U.S. city

Another retailer is exiting the Portland market.

In an email, outdoor store REI Co-op said it will close its store in Portland’s Pearl District early next year, OregonLive.com reported. The email cited security issues for the closure, adding REI had “outgrown” the store.

The Portland location “had its highest number of break-ins and thefts in two decades, despite actions to provide extra security,” the email noted.

The Pearl District store opened nearly 20 years ago after REI’s first Oregon location opened in Jantzen Beach in 1976. It is unclear if REI plans to open a new Portland store in a different location.

Pearl District is expected to close in early 2024. Its lease expired in February.

REI is the latest business to exit the Portland area market. Restaurant chain Cracker Barrel recently announced it was closing its remaining restaurants in the Portland area. That came after Walmart said it was closing its last two remaining stores in Portland after they failed to meet financial expectations and “several other factors,” including security issues.
