Jalen Hurts signing $255 million contract with Eagles

Quarterback Jalen Hurts became eligible for a new contract after playing his third NFL season in 2022, and the Philadelphia Eagles made certain the former Alabama standout wouldn’t depart in free agency after the 2023 campaign by making him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

The NFL team announced on Monday that it had reached a contract agreement with Hurts that could keep him with the Eagles through the 2028 season.

The five-year extension has a total value of $255 million, NFL Network and ESPN reported. With an average value of $51 million per season, the contract exceeds the previous largest in NFL history in that aspect – Aaron Rodgers’ current three-year deal with the Green Bay Packers, which has an average value of $50.272 million per season.

Hurts’ contract includes $179.304 million in total guarantees and features the first no-trade clause in Philadelphia history.

The contract extension comes with a $23.294 million signing bonus.

Hurts finished second in the voting for The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player Award, made second-team All-Pro and was chosen for the Pro Bowl for the 2022 season as he helped Philadelphia set a team record for victories and win the NFC championship before the Eagles fell to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12.

In the Super Bowl, Hurts became the only player to have at least 300 passing yards, 70 rushing yards and three touchdown runs in the same NFL game. Hurts also threw a touchdown pass in the contest.

In his second season as the Eagles’ starter, Hurts became the first quarterback in NFL history to have a passing-efficiency rating of at least 100 while also running for at least 10 touchdowns.

In 15 regular-season games in 2022, Hurts completed 306-of-460 passes for 3,701 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions for a passer rating of 101.5 and ran for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on 165 carries.
