Birmingham spring sports: Briarwood girls win 2 soccer games

Briarwood Christian won two girls soccer games last week during Birmingham area spring sports action.

Class 6A second-ranked Briarwood (13-2-1) beat ninth-ranked Indian Springs 6-1 and Class 7A Chelsea 5-0.

Sophomore Taylor Leib led the attack with 4 goals for the week.

Sophomore Brooklyn Barnett scored 3 goals while seniors Abigail Hoaglund, Jolee Gidrosich and Piper Eighmy each scored a goal.

GIRLS SOCCER

CLASS 7A

Top-ranked Vestavia Hills (16-2) beat Mountain Brook 4-1 and Hoover 3-1.

Anna Towry scored 2 goals against Mountain Brook while Sarah Francis Gilroy and Addison Mizerany each added a goal.

Towry scored 2 more goals against Hoover and Catherine Myrick also scored a goal.

BOYS SOCCER

CLASS 7A

Top-ranked Oak Mountain (17-2-2) posted 2 shutout wins last week, beating Spain Park 10-0 and Hewitt-Trussville 1-0 in overtime.

The Eagles are ranked No. 7 in the nation by MaxPreps.

James Whatley had 3 goals and an assist against Spain Park while Gabe Capocci had 3 goals and Sam Collins had 2 goals.

Adam Alemond had the shutout in goal.

Garrett Murphy scored the overtime goal against sixth-ranked Hewitt-Trussville and Joey Schneider had the shutout.

Fifth-ranked Chelsea (13-5-2) beat Fultondale 5-0 and lost to Thompson 3-1.

Max Wever and Parker Dean each scored 2 goals against Fultondale and Luke Miller also scored a goal and had 2 assists. Andrew Teixeira also had an assist while Brock Marlow had a save in goal in posting the shutout.

Kaleb Bass scored the goal against Thompson with an assist from Miller and Marlow had 8 saves in goal.

No. 10 Vestavia Hills (12-10-2) beat Mountain Brook 3-1 and Hoover 3-2 in 2 overtimes.

Reid Laughlin, Luke McCallum and Parker Dennie scored goals against Mountain Brook.

Dennie, McCallum and Alec Paraiso scored goals against Hoover. Dennie has 19 gaols this season while Paraiso has 13.

BASEBALL

CLASS 7A

Fourth-ranked Spain Park (25-6, 4-0 area) beat No. 10 Hewitt-Trussville twice last week, 11-1 and 7-5.

Lucas Thornton pitched a 1-hitter in the 11-1 victory, allowing an earned run in 5 innings.

Evan Smallwood was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs and a walk in the game while Cole Edwards was 2-for-3 with 2 doubles, 4 RBIs, 2 runs and a walk, Matthew Widra was 2-for-2 with an RBI, run and walk, Jacob Tobias had a run and 2 walks, Clay Spencer had a double and RBI and James Battersby had 2 RBIs.

CJ Gross pitched 6 1/3 innings to earn the 7-5 win while Tobias got the final 2 outs for the save. Gross allowed 4 hits, an earned run and struck out 6 while Tobias gave up 2 hits and struck out 2.

Smallwood was 3-for-4 with a double and 2 runs in the game while Edwards was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs, Tobias was 2-for-4, Ryan Cole belted a 3-run homer and Widra had a solo home run and 2 runs.

Oak Mountain (13-15) split with Chelsea, winning 7-3 and losing 3-1 as Peyton Parkinson was 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs, a walk and run scored.

CLASS 6A

Fourth-ranked Hueytown (25-9) was 3-1 last week, beating Brookwood twice, 9-1, 14-4 in area games and Jasper 4-0 and losing to Brookwood 12-7 in a non-area game.

John Michael Pickens pitched a complete game 3-hit shutout against Jasper.

Daniel Watkins hit .667 for the week with 5 RBIs, Sylas Amick hit .556 with 8 RBIs and Carson Barry hit .500.

Minor (28-4, 5-0 area) won 5 games last week, beating Woodlawn 32-0 and 23-0, Northside Methodist 9-8 and Mae Jemison 14-10 and 25-14.

Freshman Elijah Fuller pitched a no-hitter in the 32-0 win over Woodlawn, striking out 5 in 5 innings.

Seventh-grader Sean Bucher also pitched a no-hitter in 23-0 victory over Woodlawn, striking out 8 in 4 innings.

Kareem Keye was 14-for-21 with 16 runs, 9 RBIs, 3 walks, 15 steals and a home run for the week while Tylan Amerson was 11-for-20 with 16 runs, 7 RBIs, 3 walks, 18 steals and a home run. Corey Richardson Jr. was 5-for-16 with 14 RBIs, 6 walks, 8 steals and 2 home runs, including a grand slam.

Ethan Bucher was 14-for-22 with 17 runs, 17 RBIs, 3 walks, 10 steal and a home run.

SOFTBALL

CLASS 6A

Fifth-ranked Helena was 6-2 last week with wins over Pell City 7-1, Chelsea 4-3, Brewer 9-0 and 6-1, Brookwood, 6-1 and Cullman 3-2 and losses to Lawrence County 3-2 and Scottsboro 3-2.

Presley Lively was 12-for-25 with a triple, 8 runs, 5 RBIs and 11 steals while Amelia Powell was 10-for-21 with a home run and 5 RBIs and Emma Olive was 9-for-18 with a home run, double and 4 RBIs.

Hayden Traywick pitched 3 wins, throwing 15 Innings with 11 strikeouts and allowing 2 earned runs for a .933 ERA.

CLASS 4A

Top-ranked Curry (31-8-1) was 4-1-1 last week, winning to the championship of the Cullman tournament before falling to Scottsboro.

The Yellow Jackets beat Hamilton 13-2, McAdory 12-2, Etowah 15-0, Springville 2-0 and tied Mortimer Jordan 2-2 and lost to Scottsboro 2-1.

Ambrey Taylor batted .600 with 2 home runs 7 RBIs, 4 doubles and 9 runs while Jenna Madison hit .467 with 4 home runs, 11 RBIs and 9 runs and Ivee Grace Kelley batted .500 with 2 doubles and 6 RBIs.

Skiely Perry pitched 3wins, including a 1-hit shutout against Class 5A second-ranked Springville, allowing 3 hits with no earned runs and striking out 19 in the 3 wins.
