Auburn analyst Vontrell King-Williams selected for NFL coaching internship

Auburn defensive analyst Vontrell King-Williams is headed to the NFL, at least for a portion of the offseason.

King-Williams was selected for the NFL’s Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship Internship and will spend time this offseason learning on the Los Angeles Rams coaching staff, Auburn announced Monday morning. It’s the second consecutive year that an Auburn assistant was chosen for the internship, as defensive backs coach Zac Etheridge spent time last summer with the Los Angeles Chargers during their training camp in Costa Mesa, Calif., last July.

The internship is designed for NFL franchises to use their training camps, offseason workout programs and minicamps as an opportunity for up-and-coming coaches to watch, observe, participate and gain experience in an NFL atmosphere. The program is meant to be a potential pipeline to future coaching opportunities in the league and help increase the number of minority coaches with full-time opportunities in the NFL. All 32 NFL franchises participate in the program each year.

The internship can last anywhere from a few days to multiple weeks during the offseason. In certain cases, NFL teams have extended a participant to remain on staff for an entire season.

King-Williams joined Auburn’s support staff this offseason and has been working alongside defensive line coach Jeremy Garrett this spring.

“Vontrell is awesome,” Garrett said in February. “…He’s a really good coach. He’s a smart coach. He’s a really good teacher. He knows the players and gets to know those guys well. I just think what he’s going to bring to the table, it’s going to be a dynamic duo in recruiting and teaching these guys. I think it’s a home run hire and we’re lucky to have him.”

Before joining Hugh Freeze’s staff in January, King-Williams spent last season as Eastern Michigan’s defensive tackles coach. That was preceded by two seasons on Freeze’s Liberty staff as a defensive graduate assistant. He also worked at EMU as a graduate assistant and recruiting assistant from 2018-19. His coaching career began a year earlier as a defensive line intern at UTSA, where he played his final two seasons in 2015 and 2016 after starting his career at Illinois and then playing at the junior college level.
