Mary Montgomery exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning to overtake Baker 15-4 Friday night in West Mobile in the first game of their Class 7A area series.

The Hornets were leading Game 2 8-1 in the fifth inning of the second game Saturday. The game was postponed by rain and will resume later today in Semmes.

On Friday, Garrett Feltman blasted a three-run homer to put an exclamation point on the rally for the Vikings. Feltman, the Vikings’ home run leader, jumped on the first pitch he saw from Hornet pitcher Ethan Santos.

“I saw a fastball right down the middle of the plate, and I just put a good swing on it,” he said.

Vikings’ ace Cody Strickhausen was tagged with four runs on four hits in the first inning but held the Hornets to zero runs and scattered three hits the rest of the way.

“Cody was leaving some pitchers up and over the plate in the first inning. I had confidence in him he would settle down, and he was locked in after the tough start,” MGM coach Barry Hightower said.

Baker opened the scoring with a pair of singles and doubles in the first inning, leading to the four runs. Bryce Cain capped off the scoring for the Hornets with a hard single to center field, driving in Bryant Durbin.

“I wasn’t worried too much after giving up the four runs. I knew the guys in the dugout had my back and would battle back and score some runs,” Strickhausen said.

Strickhausen powered through six innings, allowing four runs, seven hits and striking out three for the MGM.

The Vikings scratched two runs across in the fourth. Mason Waltman doubled driving in Kaden Harrell. Koen Wilson followed with a single back up the middle to drive in Waltman.

MGM still trailed 4-2 into the sixth inning before the big rally, highlighted by Feltman’s home run.

“Hitting is contagious,” Hightower said. “That is definitely what happened tonight. One after another, guys just picking each other up.”

The Vikings finished with 13 hits, five extra base hits and 15 runs, scoring 13 in the final two innings.

Brody Tuinder, Fuller Musgrove, Mason Waltman and Kaden Harrell each had multiple hits for MGM. Harrell led the way with three hits, raising his average to .415.

Cain and Santos each had a pair of singles for the Hornets.

The series is set to resume at 1 p.m. today.
