David’s Bridal to lay off 9,000, considering sale

Bridalwear chain David’s Bridal is eyeing a sale as it looks to lay off as many as 9,000 workers nationwide.

RetailDive reported WARN notices filed in Pennsylvania indicated as many as 9,236 workers will be laid off across the U.S. Layoffs have already started and will last through August.

The Pennsylvania-based retailer employs more than 11,000 workers, according to CNN.

The company said it is currently “evaluating our strategic options and a sale process is underway.”

All of its stores currently remain open.

The New York Times reported the layoffs come as the company eyes filing for bankruptcy for the second time in five years. The sale, the report added, could be part of the chain’s restructuring plan.

David’s Bridal filed for bankruptcy in 2018. It emerged from bankruptcy in 2019 but suffered economic blows as the COVID pandemic decimated the wedding industry.

The chain operates more than 300 stores nationwide.
