A man trying to chill after work ended up having a chilling encounter.

A surveillance camera at David Oppenheimer’s home in Ashville caught the moment a black bear sauntered onto Oppenheimer’s porch, checking him out as he lay on a chair and scrolling through his phone.

Remarkably, Oppenheimer remains relatively calm after first being startled and then locking eyes with the bear. After a few seconds, the bear runs off, leaving Oppenheimer unharmed.

But Oppenheimer admits to USA Today that he was rattled by the encounter.

“I was a little frightened because it was right there and I didn’t know what it would do,” Oppenheimer said. He said the bear “seemed puzzled” by the situation.

Perhaps Oppenheimer’s calm reaction comes from the fact that it’s not unusual to see bears in Ashville, USA Today reports. The same bear had been in Oppenheimer’s earlier in the day, he said, eating from a birdfeeder and checking out a neighbor’s garbage cans.

“We are all used to them,” Oppenheimer said. “They really don’t want to bother people.”
