Auburn basketball loses 2024 commit and 4-star center due to ‘staff changes’

Auburn has lost one of its three commits in the class of 2024.

Peyton Marshall, the first recruit in his class to pick the Tigers in December, reopened his recruitment on Friday.

Marshall is the No. 82 player nationally according to 247Sports Composite. He’s the 13th-rated center and eighth-best player in Georgia. At 6-foot-11, 310-pounds, Marshall projected as a physical force in the paint should his mobility improve. He held offers from Maryland, Georgia and Miami before picking Auburn. He also visited Georgia Tech twice.

“First and foremost I would like to thank Bruce Pearl and the Auburn coaching staff. After news of recent coaching staff changes within the program and recent (sic) talks with the ones closest to me, it is within my best interest to re-open my recruitment. I truly appreciate the support the fans and basketball community have given me. I will be decommitting from the Auburn University. Please respect my decision,” Marshall said in a statement to On3.

On April 8, assistant coach Wes Flanigan left for a role on Chris Beard’s new staff at Ole Miss. Flanigan had been an effective recruiter during his five years on Pearl’s bench. One of Auburn’s other 2024 commits, Baker star Labron Philon, was recruited by Flanigan.

Both Philon and Taahad Pettiford are among the best point guard prospects in the nation. Philon is rated No. 41 overall and the best player in Alabama. Pettiford, from Hudson (N.J.) Catholic, is a five-star and ranked third at his position.
