City of Mobile announces new, first-of-its-kind path to homeownership program
Jacqueline Majumder always hoped to move back to Trinity Gardens, the neighborhood where she grew up.
“I feel safe there,” Majumder says. “It’s home, I can’t explain it anymore.”
Currently living in west Mobile, Majumder purchased, with the help of her brother, an empty lot next to her childhood home where her great-great-grandfather once had a garden. But she didn’t know how she was going to be able to build a home on the lot.
Majumder approached the city of Mobile for help, and was put in touch with James Roberts, senior director of Neighborhood Development for the city. Roberts and his team came up with an idea: what if Majumder could use her housing choice voucher for a mortgage payment on a home?
“When I get the key in my hand, then you’ll really see me jumping for joy,” Majumder said. “This is going to be my home, and this is going to be my resting place until I die. This is it.”
