Weekend slaying of 40-year-old man in Birmingham ruled justified; no charges filed

No charges will be filed in the weekend shooting death of a man killed at a small party in a west Birmingham home.

Birmingham police on Friday announced the slaying of 40-year-old Jeffrey Pleasant has been ruled justifiable by the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

West Precinct officers were dispatched at 12:50 a.m. Saturday to a report of a person shot at a home in the 600 block of Carline Avenue in the Pratt community.

Once officers got on the scene and entered the home, they found Pleasant unresponsive inside. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said an argument between the victim and the shooter led to Pleasant’s death. Pleasant did not live at the home. According to police, the argument began during a small party at the residence.

So far this year, there have been 31 homicides in the city. Of those, three have now been ruled justifiable.
