Father sues South Carolina university, says it failed to treat son, NFL veteran who shot 6

The father of a former NFL player who shot six people before killing himself two years ago is suing the South Carolina alma mater where his son played college football.

Alonzo Adams said South Carolina State University did not follow safety protocols or properly train employees to treat head trauma that his son Phillip Adams suffered while playing football at the university from 2006 to 2009, the AP reported.

Adams killed himself after the April 8, 2021 mass shooting at Rock Hill, South Carolina. The autopsy showed Adams suffered from a particularly severe form of the degenerative brain disease known as CTE. CTE has been linked to violent mood swings and memory loss.

The lawsuit alleged the university showed “negligence” in educating Phillip Adams on head trauma and failing to provide appropriate protections for players.

SCSU told the AP it does not comment on litigation.

Adams was drafted in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers and bounced around the league playing for New England Patriots, Oakland Raider, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons before leaving the league in 2015. He would not have been eligible for testing as part of a broad settlement between the league and former players over CTE injuries, because he hadn’t retired by 2014.

Adam shot six people at a house in Rock Hill, South Carolina on April 7, 2021. He died the next day after a standoff with police.
