Central takes over Class 7A top spot in ASWA softball rankings

Fresh off an impressive tournament showing, Central-Phenix City moved to Class 7A No. 1 in this week’s ASWA high school softball rankings.

It’s the first No. 1 ranking for the Red Devils in program history.

The remainder of No. 1 teams stayed atop the rankings with Class 6A Wetumpka, Class 5A Brewbaker Tech, Class 4A Curry, Class 3A Plainview, Class 2A Wicksburg, Class 1A Skyline and AISA Macon East still at No. 1.

Central (25-5-1) beat Hewitt-Trussville and Thompson — both former top-ranked teams this season — while hosting the Sidney Cooper Invitational. The Red Devils also beat sixth-ranked Spain Park during tournament play and downed No. 10 Auburn on Tuesday for their ninth straight victory.

Class 3A top-ranked Plainview (25-0) continues to be the only undefeated team among the rankings.

For the first time since at least March 20, 2003, Pisgah is unranked. The Eagles – winners of a state-best 10 softball championships – had appeared in 132 straight polls.
