Alabama State Trooper released from hospital after being shot
The state trooper shot in the line of duty on Sunday in south Alabama has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, authorities said Wednesday.
Cpl. Jeremy Alford was shot by a suspect in Escambia County on Sunday night following a pursuit. An exchange of gunfire followed, injuring two people, including Alford, and killing the suspect.
The incident began at 6:30 p.m. Sunday as Alford tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Interstate 65 in Conecuh County. The driver failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued.
The chase traveled into Escambia County where the suspect’s vehicle left the road.
“Once off the roadway, an officer-involved shooting occurred,’’ said Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sgt. Jeremy Burkett in a news a release. He did not elaborate on how many people, or who, fired shots.
The name of the slain suspect has not yet been released.
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor, who commended Alford’s bravery in a statement on Tuesday, gave an update on the corporal’s condition on Wednesday.
“He has been released from the hospital and is currently at home resting with family,” Taylor said through a spokesman.
“We ask that everyone continue to keep Cpl. Alford and his family in both your thoughts and prayers as he continues to recover,” the secretary said.
