AHSAA North-South basketball all-star rosters named
Alabama’s 2023 Mr. Basketball Labaron Philon of Baker High School, two 2022-23 state finals girls’ MVP performers, plus a boys’ finals MVP highlight the 27th annual AHSAA North-South All-Star Boys’ and Girls’ basketball teams.
Joining Philon on the four 15-member squads announced on Wednesday by Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association director Brandon Dean are Class 6A championship MVP Leah Brooks of Hazel Green, 5A title game MVP Tamya Smith of Pleasant Grove and boys’ 5A MVP Cam’Ron Dooley of Valley.
The AHSADCA, operating under the auspices of the Alabama High School Athletic Association, also hosts all-star games in baseball, softball, volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, cross country, tennis and golf during the All-Star Week, July 17-22.
The 64th annual North-South All-Star Football Game was played last December at Mobile with the South winning 42-7.
The North girls’ all-star coaches are Blake Prestage of Rogers and Crosby Morrison of Pelham with Brant Llewellyn of Lauderdale County, who will serve as administrative coach for both North squads. The South girls’ coaches are Emily Flanigan of Foley and Charlie Williams of Lanett with administrative coach for both South squads Robb McGaughey of LAMP.
The North boys’ coaches are James Graves of Etowah and Jason Bell of Scottsboro. The South boys’ coaches are Marcus Turner of Keith and Timothy Faison of Charles Henderson.
Other standouts on the South team of rising seniors who will join Auburn commitment Philon and Dooley are Jeff Davis guard Jamicah Adair, who scored 30 points a game for the Volunteers. Dooley and fellow All-Star Brandon Thomas helped Valley become the first 5A team this century to finish the season unbeaten. Valley won the state championship at 33-0.
State champs Landon White of Plainview and Montrevion Kellogg of Covenant Christian highlight the North All-Star squad. Mountain Brook’s Ty Davis and Westminster Christian’s Chase McCarty also played in this year’s Final Four.
Hazel Green’s Brooks, a University of Alabama commitment, will be joined by her Trojans’ teammate Sydney Steward on the North All-Star team. Jasper guard Mia Hollingsworth, who has already scored 2,576 points in her career, is also on the squad.
Among the standouts on the girls’ South squad are guard Jasmyn Thomas of Loachapoka, Ashauntee Hobbs of Foley and Laila Lancaster of Lanett, all of whom were participants in the state semifinals.
The North-South all-star basketball competition will be live-streamed by the NFHS Network and AHSAA TV Network.
The North won both games last summer. The North girls won 75-52 to improve to 22-3 in the annual series, and the North boys won 101-91 and now hold a 50-29 edge in the series.
