Mobile Council District 6 special election set for July 25

The race to replace former Mobile City Councilmember Scott Jones is officially on, with the necessary special election now set on July 25.

The Mobile City Council set the date for the District 6 special election at their meeting Tuesday. A runoff, if it is needed, will be held August 22. Qualifying for the special election will begin on June 6 and end June 20.

Jones unexpectedly resigned last week, allegedly because of the city’s continued relationship with AltaPointe Health Systems, which he has long criticized. Jones later confirmed that he was selling his house, though he would not say whether he was moving out of Mobile. He later told 1819 News that he planned to move out of Mobile but would not say where he’s going.

Though Jones initially stated he would serve until the end of the month, the city later confirmed that his resignation would be effective immediately, leaving his seat vacant.

According to Mobile City Clerk Lisa Lambert, a special election will cost between $75,000-$100,000, based on the cost of past special elections.
