UAB basketball to play in 2023 Asheville Championship

Along with a slew of new conference opponents for the 2023-2024 season, the UAB basketball team is heading to Appalachia for an early season tournament that includes perennial NCAA tournament programs.

The Blazers are set to play in the third annual Asheville Championship, November 10-12, 2023, at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina.

Matchups have yet to be announced for the four-team field that includes UAB, Atlantic-10 foe Davidson and Clemson from the ACC, and Big Ten member Maryland.

“In the two years that we’ve come to Asheville to kick-off the college basketball season with the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, we’ve brought new fans, stronger programs and more excitement each time,” former Wake Forest head coach and tournament relations director Dave Odom said. “The Championship has also started gaining a reputation for buzzer-beater finishes, and with the field of teams we have coming ready to battle it out, this year could be our best one yet.”

GOODMAN: UAB will curse this NIT time and time again

Davidson finished this past season at 16-16 overall, falling to VCU in the A-10 tournament quarterfinals, and Clemson capped its season in a 68-64 loss to Morehead State in the first round of the NIT. Meanwhile, Maryland’s season came to an end in a 73-51 loss to Alabama in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The Blazers have faced neither the Wildcats or Terrapins in their 45-year history but own a 2-1 record against Clemson.

In their initial meeting, the Blazers defeated the Tigers 65-64 in Birmingham in the second round of the 1993 NIT — four days following a 58-56 first-round win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa. UAB got the better of Clemson again early in the 2004-2005 season, grabbing a 78-66 win at the 2004 Rainbow Classic in Hawaii, but fell to the Tigers 70-52 in the First Four of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.

The Blazers wrapped up the 2022-2023 season at 29-10 overall — setting the program record for wins in a single season — and finished second place behind North Texas in the NIT. UAB also defeated South Florida and Georgia on back-to-back days in November to claim the 2022 Sunshine Slam title.
