Gulf Shores police: ‘No danger to public’ from armed domestic dispute

Gulf Shores police said there was “no danger to the public” from a domestic dispute Monday morning in which an armed man who held his wife captive at gunpoint.

Police were called to Islander Apartments on East 23rd Avenue just before 8:30 a.m. Monday. Arriving at the scene, officers learned an armed man was inside and refusing to allow his wife to leave.

The Gulf Shores SWAT team was called to the scene and Gulf Shores schools were notified, with both the high school and elementary school located just over a mile from the scene. The schools were put on “heightened awareness,” according to police.

Ultimately, the wife exited the apartment and confirmed her husband was still inside. Shortly after, the husband was spotted attempting to flee the scene through window.

After a short struggle, officers took the man — identified as Allen Wayne Stafford — into custody. He has been charged with 3rd-degree domestic violence. Additional charges are pending, according to police.
