Birmingham spring sports: Spain Park baseball wins 2 against Oak Mountain

Spain Park won a pair of baseball games against Oak Mountain last week during Birmingham area spring sports action.

Fourth-ranked Spain Park (23-6) beat Oak Mountain 5-3 and 10-0.

Jacob Tobias was 2-for-5 on the week, including a double in the seventh inning that broke a 3-all tie in the 5-3 victory over Oak Mountain. Tobias also had 3 RBIs for the week.

JohnRobert Thompson was 3-for-5 during the week with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs and also picked up a win in relief with 2 innings in the 5-3 win, allowing 2 runs, both unearned, and striking out 3.

Cole Edwards was 4-for-7 with 2 home runs, 2 doubles, 5 RBIS and 4 runs while Clay Spencer was 3-for-7 with a walk.

CJ Gross pitched the shutout win, striking out 3 and allowing 4 hits in 6 innings. Lucas Thornton pitched 5 innings, striking out 3 and allowing an unearned run.

BASEBALL

CLASS 7A

Oak Mountain (12-14) lost to Spain Park 5-3 and 10-0 as Matt Heiberger allowed 3 earned runs in 6 innings and was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, 3 walks and a run.

CLASS 6A

Minor (23-4, 3-0 area) won four games last week, beating Parker three times, 22-3, 10-0 and 8-7, and also downed Ramsay 20-10.

Senior Kareem Keye pitched a 5-inning no-hitter — shortened because of the 10-run Mercy rule — striking out 9 and walking 6 in the 22-3 victory. All 3 runs were unearned.

Junior first baseman Corey Richardson led the Tigers at the plate last week with 12 hits in 14 at-bats, adding 6 RBIs, 9 runs, 4 walks 3 steals and only a single strikeout.

CLASS 5A

Pleasant Grove (10-14) was 2-1 with two wins over Wenonah, 11-9 and 14-4, and a loss to Fultondale 7-3.

Kaleb Freeman hit .471 for the week with 4 hits, 5 RBIs and 2 runs while Brandon Whatley batted .500 with 5 hits 3 RBIs and 3 runs and John Fletcher hit .500 with 4 hits an RBI and 3 runs.

Freeman also pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing 2 earned runs striking out 6 and Tim Blue pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing an earned run and striking out 5.

CLASS 2A

Ninth-ranked Vincent (19-3) won 5 games last week, beating Ranburne 12-2, B.B. Comer 14-0, 16-0 and 16-4 and Horseshoe Bend 3-0.

Pitcher Aiden Poe threw 5 scoreless innings against B.B. Comer, striking out 12 while first baseman Easton Fields was 8-for-10 with 4 home runs and 10 RBIs for the week.

SOFTBALL

CLASS 6A

Fifth-ranked Helena (16-9) beat Briarwood 15-0 and lost to Vestavia Hills 5-2.

Mary Beth Allen was 4-for-6 with a double and 3 RBIs while Presley Lively was 3-for-6 with a home run, triple, 3 RBIs, 4 runs and 3 steals and Victoria Mauterer was 3-for-6 with a home run and 3 RBIs.

Hayden Traywick pitched 4 innings, striking out 7 and allowing 2 hits while Mauterer threw 3 hitless innings, striking out 3.

Hueytown was 2-1 last week with wins over Pinson Valley 12-2 and Bessemer City 22-3 and a loss to McAdory 6-5.

Kelsey Johnson, Leah Cottingham, Madison Smith and Madison Moore each had 2 hits against Pinson Valley.

Johnson, Bryanna Kemp, Cottingham, Kylie Kennedy, Madison Moore and Gracelyn McCarrell each had 2 hits against Bessemer City.

Kennedy, Chloe Bingham, Johnson, Morgan Rice, Kemp and Cottingham each had a hit against McAdory while Kemp pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 walks and striking out 10.

BOYS SOCCER

CLASS 7A

Top-ranked Oak Mountain (15-2-2) beat Dothan 4-1 and tied Enterprise 2-all.

Caleb Smith had 3 goals for the week while Harrison Kilgore had three assists.

Fifth-ranked Chelsea (12-4-2) beat Prattville 2-1 and Hewitt-Trussville 4-0 last week.

Andrew Teixeira and Leighton Garrard scored goals against Prattville while Parker Dean and Teixeira had assists.

Max Wever scored 2 goals against Hewitt-Trussville while Garrard and Davis Spencer each had a goal. Teixeira had 2 assists and Grant Saether added an assist.

Brock Marlow had the shutout in goal.

GIRLS SOCCER

CLASS 6A

Second-ranked Briarwood Christian (11-2-1) beat Helena 3-2 on Wednesday.

Senior Jolee Giadrosich along with sophomores Brooklyn Barnett and Taylor Leib each scored goals while seniors Bradford Latta and Piper Eighmy led the defense.

Ninth-ranked Indian Springs (8-2) beat Northridge 5-2 as Norah Roller and Chloe Williams each scored 2 goals and Addison Doyle added a goal.

BOYS TENNIS

CLASS 7A

Vestavia Hills beat Homewood and won the Auburn Invitational Tournament last week.

The tournament was comprised of host Auburn, Huntsville, Florence, St. James, Woodward Academy (Ga.) and Allatoona (Ga.).

Jake Anthony, Luke Bedwell, Kade Nelson and Brayden Helms were all 4-0 in singles last week while Louis Kolettis was 2-0, Parker Liu was 2-1 and Andrew Pipkin and John Michael Yanosky each won a match.

Jake Anthony and Luke Bedwell along with Kade Nelson and Brayden Helms were both 3-0 in doubles and Ben Cusmariu and Collier Clemmons were 2-1.
