1 killed, 2 injured when shots fired during argument at private event center in Birmingham

One person was killed, and two others injured when gunfire erupted during an argument at a party early Sunday in Birmingham.

North Precinct officers were on patrol near Legion Field when, about 2:40 a.m., they heard shots fired.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the officers drove to the 200 block of Eighth Avenue West where they found two men in the roadway. Both had been shot.

An officer applied a tourniquet to one of the victims. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service then transported both to a hospital.

Fitzgerald said those victims’ injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

While officers were on the scene investigating, they learned a third gunshot victim had been taken by private vehicle to Princeton Baptist Medical Center. That victim, also an adult male, was pronounce dead at the hospital.

Fitzgerald said all three victims were attending a party that was held a private event center when an argument erupted inside and spilled over to the outside.  The argument turned into a physical altercation, and then shots were fired.

“We believe that the three gunshot victims were involved in the physical altercation,’’ he said.

No arrests have been made.

The slain man, whose name has not been released, is the city’s 31st homicide victim this year and the fourth in less than a week, including a fatal shooting early Saturday.

Outside of Birmingham, both Fultondale and Homewood police also investigated homicides on Saturday.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 41 homicides so far this year.

Anyone with information in this morning’s shooting is asked to call detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
