Once upon a time, it was known as “roughing it smoothly.”

These days, it’s “glamping” and perhaps falls into the if-you-know-you-know category. And it’s coming to six Alabama state parks.

If you know that you don’t know, though, glamping is “a form of camping featuring more luxurious facilities than those associated with traditional camping,” according to the announcement Friday by the state parks. Think of it as combining “glamorous” with “camping” and “glamping” it is.

This camping is so glamorous that you don’t even need to bring a tent. Glamping sites provide all needed accommodations, according to the state parks, including beds, linens, electricity and air conditioning/heaters.

The first glamping park will be Wind Creek State Park on Lake Martin near Alexander City beginning April 21. Other state parks that will soon add glamping sites are Chewacla near Auburn by mid-May, Lake Guntersville by Memorial Day, and Cheaha (near Anniston), DeSoto (near Fort Payne) and Monte Sano (in Huntsville) this summer.

“We strive to offer the very best experience to every guest,” said Chris Blankenship, commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, in the announcement. “Glamping has become increasingly popular during the last few years, and we often field questions from people asking if we offer it. We already have many other types of overnight options for our guests, so it made sense for us to add glamping as a new amenity. This is another exciting way people can enjoy the amazing scenic beauty available at our Alabama State Parks.”

Alabama State Parks has partnered with Timberline Glamping to manage and operate the new sites. The company, founded in 2018, also offers glamping at multiple sites in Georgia and Florida, including several state parks.

“To get more families and friends outdoors in a new and different way is the heart of what we do,” said Rebeka Self, who co-owns Timberline with her husband Nathan.

Reservations at Wind Creek can be made at the Timberline website. And once other Alabama state parks offer glamping, you can also make reservations on the Timberline website as well as the state parks website.

“Not everyone wants to stay in a hotel-style room at one of our resorts and not everyone wants to sleep on the ground at a primitive campsite,” Blankenship said. “These glamping sites provide something new for our guests, and we believe they will embrace and enjoy this additional overnight option.”
