Class 6A third-ranked Athens blasted six extra-base hits, including a home run by Mya Clark, to earn a 16-5 win at home on Tuesday over seventh-ranked Hazel Green.

Caitlyn Tedford tripled and Payton Matherne had two doubles in the Area 16 win. Morgan Stiles and Cori Campbell also had doubles for Athens. Matherne was 4-for-5 with three RBIs, Campbell was 1-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs and Clark went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Gracie Ausley went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Clark earned the win in the circle, giving up five runs – four earned – on nine hits with three strikeouts and nine walks over 5.1 innings.

Mason Quinnie took the loss for Hazel Green, allowing 11 runs – seven earned – on 12 hits in 1.2 innings.

Mackenzie Bowling and Mariah Bazile had doubles for the Trojans. Bazile was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

SOFTBALL

Madison County 9, DAR 5: Gracyn Spicer earned a complete game Class 4A Area 14 win for the Tigers on Tuesday. Spicer gave up seven hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Madison County (22-5) also beat Scott County of Georgetown, Ky., 8-1; Brooks 8-1 and Greenwood of Bowling Green, Ky., 6-5 this week. The Tigers lost 9-4 to Brewer at home.

In the win at DAR, Livy Huter, Allie Yeary and Sydney Gurley had three hits each. Aubrey Shaddix and Addy Gustafson had two hits each.

Sarah Stewart had a pair of hits for DAR. Heidi Phillips was saddled with the loss in the circle.

Lawrence County 8, East Lawrence 6: The Red Devils rolled to an 8-0 lead and held on to earn a road win on Wednesday. Lawrence County scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings, had a three-run inning in the second and added two more in the fifth. East Lawrence scored five in the sixth and added one in the seventh.

Leadoff hitter Andee McKay went 3-for-4 – all doubles – with two RBIs and scored a run for Lawrence County. Alexis LouAllen and McKenzie Hyche also doubled for the Red Devils. Hyche was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. LouAllen also had an RBI, as did Addison Plaxco, Bella Cross, and Ava Templeton, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Jaala Hawkins, who was 2-for-4, also drove in a run.

Kaytie LouAllen earned the win in the circle, allowing no runs on six hits with two strikeouts over five innings.

Mattie Gillespie took the loss for East Lawrence, giving up four earned runs on five hits with one strikeout in two innings.

Taylor Kelly and Averie Hargett both went 2-for-4 for the Eagles. Kelsi Whitehead was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

On Tuesday, Lawrence County beat Hatton 10-5 on the road. Bella Cross homered and earned the win in the circle. Cross gave up three runs on six hits in 3.2 innings for the Red Devils. She struck out two and walked three.

Hyche doubled and drove in four runs as she went 2-for-4 for the winners. Templeton had two RBIs and two runs scored for Lawrence County. McKay was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

Dagan Brown and Marlie Hood had doubles for Hatton. Hood was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Arlie Armstrong went 3-for-4.

Bradyn Mitchell took the loss for Hatton, giving up 10 runs – six earned – over 6.1 innings. She struck out eight and walked four.

Randolph 11, Columbia 0: Two senior Raiders registered hat tricks and a seventh-grader got her first varsity goal as Randolph improved to 5-3-1 on the season and 2-0 in Class 6A Area 15 with the shutout on Tuesday.

Sarah Kate Mitchell and Norah Connell scored three goals each, with Mitchell adding two assists in the win, and Caroline Wyatt got her first varsity goal.

The Raiders also got a goal and two assists from senior Madison DeOrio, a goal and an assist from freshman Mary Newton Maxwell and goals from sophomore Ellie Ward and freshman Anne Fowlkes Schreeder.

Randolph had 29 shots on goal while holding Columbia to one.

Hazel Green 6, Lee-Huntsville 0: Eighth-grader Reanna Chapman booted in three goals to help the ninth-ranked Trojans improve to 12-3 on the year, 6-0 in Class 6A Area 16 play.

Anna Amara had seven saves in recording a clean sheet in the road match on Thursday.

Senior Makenna Boyle scored two goals for Hazel Green and junior Aria Stout scored one.

Boyle had a pair of assists with senior Kirkleigh Sweetman and sophomore Addy Humphrey adding one each.

Hazel Green 2, Lee-Huntsville 0: Senior Edgar Rodriguez scored both goals as No. 10 Class 6A Hazel Green blanked the Generals on the road on Thursday.

Junior Tyler Holman had an assist for the Trojans, who improved to 13-1-1 and 6-0 in Area 16 play.

Senior keeper Hoyt Stewart had seven saves to earn a clean sheet.

Hartselle 4, Decatur 2: The Tigers got the Class 6A Area 14 home win on Tuesday to improve to 16-3-2 on the season.

Hartselle got goals from Ethan Medendorp, Owen Bennich, Jack Adams and Luke Vinson. Bennich also had an assist in the win.

BASEBALL

New Hope 6-5, Madison County 3-1: The Indians traveled to Gurley on Thursday and swept the Class 4A Area 13 double-header to win the three-game series 2-1. Madison County (16-12) won the series opener 12-9 at New Hope on Tuesday.

New Hope’s Riley Schutte struck out eight and allowed two earned runs on four hits in 6.1 innings to earn the win. Schutte also went 1-for-3 with an RBI in Game 1.

Colby Hall went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for the winners (17-8, 3-3). Layton Pohl went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and drove in three runs.

In Game 2, a 5-1 win in 10 innings, a trio of New Hope pitchers combined on a two-hitter. Ethan Sumner pitched 3.1 innings with five strikeouts and Pohl, the game winner, struck out seven in 6.1 innings. Neither pitcher allowed an earned run. Schutte earned a four-pitch save in one-third of an inning.

Charlie Harbin went 2-for-3 in the win and walked twice. Hall and Nathan Adcock both had a hit and an RBI.

Madison County 12, New Hope 9: Andre Towers ripped a grand slam home run in the top of the sixth inning on Tuesday to push Madison County up 11-8 and Memphis Scott drove in a run to complete a five-run inning for the winners.

Scott finished 3-for-3 on the day with a pair of runs scored for the Tigers. Jake Thornton doubled and drove in a run and Nicholas Sharp was 2-for-5. Ryan Caudle, Nolan Daversa and Sharp also had RBIs for the winners.

Ethan Sumner and Preston Lewis homered for New Hope. Charlie Harbin and Nathan Adcock were both 2-for-4 at the plate. Lewis and Colby Hall had two RBIs each in the loss.

Riley Schutte gave up four runs – three earned – and Towers’ home run in taking the loss in one inning of relief for New Hope. Schutte had one strikeout while starter Andrew Dudley struck out six and walked seven, allowing seven runs – four earned – on four hits in 4.1 innings.

Priceville 10, Pell City 2: The Class 4A Bulldogs whipped 6A Pell City on Monday, pulling away from a 3-2 lead after one inning with single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings and four more in the seventh.

Thomas Kerby smacked a three-run home run for Priceville, Ty Parker went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored with Ryan Hanks and Wes Walker going 2-for-3 at the plate. Walker, Zachary Chaney, Jackson Prickett, Joseph Garrison, Xander Gaines and Parker all had an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Garrison earned the complete-game win, allowing two earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Starter Brady Laminack took the loss for Pell City, allowing five runs – four earned – on six hits with one strikeout and one walk in 3.2 innings.

Tait Nunnally homered for the Panthers. Peyton Moss and Baylor Fields also had hits for Pell City.

Hartselle 7, Decatur 2: The second-ranked Class 6A Tigers got all their runs in their first at-bat in the road victory in a Class 6A Area 14 contest on Wednesday, chasing Decatur starter Mac Hillis after just one-third of an inning.

Hillis gave up seven earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Jack Smith pitched a complete game to earn the win, striking out 12 Decatur batters. Smith gave up two unearned runs on two hits with four walks over seven innings.

Coleman Mizell led the winners with two hits in four at-bats with two RBIs. Jo Jo Williamson was also 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

On Tuesday, Hartselle jumped to a 5-0 first-inning lead and added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the second to earn the 7-5 home win. The Red Raiders scored a run in the top of the third and four in the fourth before relievers Nic Chumley and Eli Tidwell, who earned the save, shut the door.

Peyton Steele got the win for Hartselle, allowing four earned runs on four hits over three innings. Steele struck out two and walked two. Chumley gave up one earned run in three innings with two strikeouts and two hits. Tidwell pitched a scoreless seventh inning and struck out one.

Tidwell also ripped a home run and two doubles for Hartselle. The leadoff hitter went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Cam Palahach went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Coleman Mizell doubled and drove in a run for the Tigers.
