City of Birmingham says plans to combat predatory towing are coming soon

Birmingham officials are reviewing the city’s towing ordinance after more than a decade of driver complaints accusing one local towing company, Parking Enforcement Systems (PES), of predatory practices.

Representatives for Birmingham’s City Council and Birmingham’s Department of Transportation (BDOT) said previously that they plan to have a solution for the issue within the next month and have promised a public town hall for drivers to share their experiences soon.

Last month BDOT also placed ten signs throughout private lots in the downtown area warning drivers of this possible risk.

As the Lede reported earlier this month the city began placing the first signs the same week that 50,000 people arrived in Birmingham for the NCAA Tournament.

Rick Journey, director of communications for the city, said that currently only the ten will be placed but added that BDOT will follow up to see if more are needed in the future.
