Family of man fatally shot by Jeffco deputy says he was wrongly killed, asks for help with burial

Family members of a man fatally shot by a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy say they believe he was wrongly killed and are asking for help with his burial.

Tedarrius Quentez Smith, 28, died Monday in what authorities say was an armed confrontation following a police chase from Fairfield to Birmingham.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says Smith pointed a gun at the deputy, who then shot and killed Smith.

“My brother was wrongfully shot and killed by sheriff officers due to false accusation,’’ his sister, Brittney Smith, wrote in a GoFundMe.

“My brother was a good man. He took care of his kids and made sure everyone around him was good,’’ Brittney Smith wrote. “The money that will be raised would be used towards burying my brother and putting him away in a decent manner.”

According to ALEA, a deputy tried to stop Smith for traffic violations. Sheriff’s Deputy Chief David Agee said they learned there was an outstanding warrant for someone in the vehicle for kidnapping.

The pursuit ended when the black Infiniti came to a chain fence at the Collegeville public housing community and could not go any further.

Three people reportedly then exited the vehicle.

ALEA officials said Smith fled on foot and pointed a gun at the deputy. That’s when the deputy shot Smith.

Two others reportedly taken into custody.

The shooting happened at 1:43 p.m., and Smith was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:52 p.m. He died in a grassy area under the bridge near the Collegeville public housing community.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is leading the investigation. Officials there said once the investigation is complete, they will present the findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

“I just want to say thank you all for your support as we go through this difficult time trying to lay my brother to rest,’’ Brittney Smith wrote. Donations can be made here.
