Alabama singers on ‘The Voice’: one ‘smashes it,’ another sent home in battle rounds

Two more Alabama singers were featured this week during battle rounds on “The Voice,” singing their hearts out for the celebrity coaches. One triumphed, winning his battle and moving on to the next round, known as the knockouts. Another received praise for his battle performance, but was sent home.

Here’s what happened on Tuesday’s episode, as Jerome Godwin III and JB Somers, both from Montgomery, were paired with other contestants for duets on the NBC reality series.

JEROME GODWIN III VS. TALIA SMITH: ‘I THOUGHT YOU SMASHED IT’

Godwin, 20, joined teammate Talia Smith for a cover of “Like I Can” by Sam Smith. Their coach, Niall Horan, said he chose this song for Godwin and Smith because both contestants have big voices. After the performance, all four coaches offered kudos and constructive criticism to the singers.

“I thought that was so well done,” Clarkson said. “Jerome, you had so much control over your runs. You weren’t attacking them; you were letting them flow, which was so nice. You stuck out more but me, but I will say, Talia, you have the range and you have the capability with performance. I could not take my eyes off of you. … I’m bummed to see either one of you go.”

“Jerome, I thought you smashed it,” Chance the Rapper said. “You could sing anything. I feel like you’d be really good with gospel and soul, but I also think you could do, like, Broadway stuff. Talia, I think there were like a few pitch issues a couple of times. I feel like this song is a little uptempo for your style. But midway point through to the end, you found it. And all the blends and (harmonies) came through really well.”

“Talia, when it was time for a big moment, for some reason you felt more comfortable there, but there was a lot of loose ends,” Blake Shelton said. “And because of those issues, I just think Jerome took this battle.”

“That was phenomenal for both of you,” Horan said. “There were obviously some pitch issues across the board. It was still an unbelievable performance. Talia, what you did to that melody in the second verse was just phenomenal … And Jerome put on an amazing performance, too.”

In the end, Horan chose Godwin as the winner. “At the end of the day, I had to go with Jerome,” Horan said.

Godwin advances to compete in the “Voice” knockouts, with guidance from “mega-mentor” Reba McEntire.

JB SOMERS VS. RACHEL CHRISTINE: ‘ONE OF YOU STOOD OUT A LITTLE BIT MORE’

Somers, 31, teamed with Rachel Christine cover a cover of “Light On” by Maggie Rogers. Clarkson, their coach, said she chose this tune for the battle because both vocalists have a singer-songwriter vibe. After the performance, all four coaches offered praise and pointed to flaws.

“That was amazing,” Horan said. “You really got into that. What I would say is, felt the nerves, just a little bit. It obviously is a tense scenario, but I could definitely hear it and feel it. But both of you grew into it, a lot. … That climax was phenomenal; it was really good. … If I was leaning once way, I would lean towards JB.”

“I would hate to be the one making this decision, but if I was, I think Rachel was the clear winner,” Chance said. “I think you have such a strong voice, and I think that you could win this entire competition.”

“What happened in the early part of the song wasn’t exactly on the rails,” Shelton said. “It wasn’t at first, and then it got there. And JB, you did a lot of cool stuff up in your head voice, that was cool to hear. I feel like, overall, Rachel had the better performance.”

“I think one of you stood out a little bit more today,” Clarkson said. “So I’m going to have to say, the winner of this battle is Rachel.”

Somers was eliminated from the competition, but received a final vote of confidence from Clarkson, who said, “You are incredible. You are a great vocalist.”

WHAT’S NEXT

For the record, “The Voice” features five stages of competition: Blind auditions, battle rounds, knockouts, playoffs and live performance shows. Blind auditions and battle rounds are finished.

“The Voice” knockouts start on April 17. An NBC press release describes the knockouts this way: “Artists are paired against each other, selecting their own songs to perform individually while their direct competitors watch and wait. Coaches choose the winner and the artist not selected is available for a ‘steal.’ The pressure is on as each coach only has one ‘steal’ during this round.”

Godwin will be the only Alabama singer competing in the knockouts, but he’s not the only singer from the state remaining on “The Voice” during Season 23. Ryley Tate Wilson of Montgomery and D. Smooth of Birmingham received a “playoff pass” from their coaches after their battles, allowing both to skip the knockouts and move directly to the next round, called the playoffs.

Viewers will see Wilson and D.Smooth compete again on episodes airing in early May, when the playoffs begin.

Alabama’s never had a winner on “The Voice,” but three singers from our state have made it to the finals: Dexter Roberts, who took third place on Season 16; Kirk Jay, who placed third on Season 15; and Red Marlow, who came in fourth during Season 13. Other “Voice” contestants from the state have included Berritt Haynes, Emma Caroline Warren, Levi Watkins, Cam Spinks, Josie Jones and Worth the Wait.
