Louisiana man found driving with 13 iguanas bound with tape
A Louisiana man is in the Santa Rosa (Fla.) County Jail, facing multiple charges after deputies found him transporting 13 iguanas in his truck, each with their limbs bound with tape.
Jairo Anibal Ramirez Caballero, 27, was pulled over by Santa Rosa County deputies Monday night after he was spotted following another vehicle too closely in his Dodge Ram on Interstate 10 near Milton, according to WKRG, citing a Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
The report said deputies found the 13 iguanas spread among tools and other equipment in the bed of the truck, which was equipped with a bed cover, providing little ventilation for the reptiles.
One of the iguanas was dead, having apparently succumbed to “the living conditions in the truck bed,” including laying in their own feces, according to the report.
Ramirez Caballero did not have a permit to transport the iguanas. He also did not have a valid driver’s license. He has been charged with one felony count of torture of an animal/inflicting pain, injury or death, along with two counts of violating Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission rules. Bond was set at $6,250 on all charges.
Iguanas are an invasive species and in 2019 the conservation commission began to encourage Florida residents to kill iguanas on their property because they were multiplying so rapidly in south Florida.
In January, CBS News reported the iguana population had continued to multiply rapidly, causing an array of damage across Florida as they continue to migrate north.
Iguanas have caused numerous power outages in the state and in 2020 West Palm Beach spent $1.8 million to repair a dam which had been damaged by iguanas.
In 2021, Florida banned the ownership of pet iguanas.
Iguanas are not dangerous or aggressive to humans but can dig tunnels which can damage pavement and building foundations. They can also carry salmonella bacteria.
