Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay an $8.9 billion settlement over claims that its talc-based baby powder caused cancer.

The company announced the plan to resolve tens of thousands of lawsuits related to “all current and future talc claims.” In all, Johnson & Johnson said it has secured the support of more than 60,000 parties that have filed lawsuits against the company, CNBC reported.

Payments from the $8.9 billion settlement will be made over the next 25 years and still must be approved by bankruptcy court that is handling proceedings for J&J’s subsidiary, LTL Management.

J&J maintains, however, that the claims are “specious and lack scientific merit,” according to a company spokesperson.

J&J ended sales of talc-based baby powder this year after facing thousands of lawsuits related to potential cancer-causing agents in the products.
