Troy coach Jon Sumrall up for spring game against Auburn: ‘I’d go play’
Troy coach Jon Sumrall is willing to take Hugh Freeze up on his offer.
On Monday, the Auburn coach suggested playing an opponent for the annual spring game as opposed to an intra-squad scrimmage.
“I wouldn’t have a problem with it,” Sumrall told 247Sports. “I’d go play.”
While willing to play a game, Sumrall pointed out a joint practice session – as done by NFL teams – would make for a better spring plan.
“Do you get caught up in preparing for the game more than just using spring as a developmental time for individuals — and for experimenting, adapting and growing within your systems on offense, defense and in the kicking game?” Sumrall said. “Those are the only drawbacks I see.”
Freeze pitched his idea Monday, proposing that teams pick a charity to give ticket sales proceeds to. He talked about an in-state showcase. Auburn could play a school like UAB and Alabama would play Troy — or vice versa — with gate revenue donated to support an agreed-upon cause within the state.
