Walmart lays off 2,000 workers
Walmart is laying off more than 2,000 workers at five U.S. warehouses that fulfill website orders.
CNN reported the nation’s largest retailer will cut more than 1,000 jobs in Texas, 600 jobs in Pennsylvania, 400 in Florida and 200 in New Jersey, according to Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification, or WARN, filings.
The cutbacks, according to a report from Reuters, is due to the elimination of evening and weekend shifts. The impacted workers were given 90 days to find jobs at other Walmart facilities, including new high-tech e-commerce distribution centers in Joliet, Illinois and Lancaster, Texas.
The layoffs come after Walmart announced it was closing a handful of stores it described as “underperforming.” Fifteen stores in 11 states and Washington, D.C. – including two pick-up only locations – are set for closure.
