Rookie season might be over early for Walker Kessler

The Utah Jazz’s injury report on Monday showed center Walker Kessler had entered the NBA’s concussion protocol, and that could mean the season is over for the rookie from Auburn.

In the third quarter of Utah’s 111-110 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, Kessler took a glancing elbow off his head under the basket from teammate Talen Horton-Tucker that sent the center to the floor.

When he got up, Kessler was wobbly and left the game.

A player in the concussion protocol cannot return until he is free of concussion symptoms, gets clearance from a physician and passes the NBA’s return-to-exertion tests. As a final step, the player’s team physician must consult with the director of the NBA’s concussion program.

That usually takes at least seven days. Utah’s regular-season schedule ends on Sunday, although the Jazz remain in the running to qualify for the postseason.

At 36-42 with four games remaining, Utah is 1.5 games out of the 10th seed, the final spot for the four-team play-in tournament to get into the Western Conference playoffs.

The Jazz has home games against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday and Denver Nuggets on Saturday before the regular-season finale against the Lakers in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Kessler has averaged 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in 74 games this season. Since joining the Utah starting lineup on a nightly basis on Jan. 10, Kessler has averaged 11.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.9 blocks in 34 games.

Kessler leads the NBA’s rookies in double-doubles and is the eighth rookie in the past 40 seasons with at least four games with seven or more blocked shots.
