Birmingham spring sports: Hewitt-Trussville wins Gulf Coast III softball tourney

Hewitt-Trussville won eight straight games last week to capture the Gulf Coast Classic III softball tournament in Gulf Shores during Birmingham area spring sports action.

Class 7A third-ranked Hewitt-Trussville (25-4) beat Class 5A top-ranked Springville 12-0 for the title and beat Class 7A fourth-ranked Vestavia Hills 5-1 in semifinal play.

The Huskies also beat Forest (Fla.) 7-0, Class 7A ninth-ranked Enterprise 3-2, Wilson 3-1, Hokes Bluff 2-1, Class 4A fifth-ranked Houston Academy 10-1 and Class 7A sixth-ranked Hoover 5-3 in quarterfinal action.

Hannah Dorsett led the Huskies at the plate with 11 hits in 22 at-bats with a home run, 7 RBIs and 9 runs.

Zaylen Tucker was 9-for-19 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs, Gracie Reeves was 9-for-19 with 2 doubles, 9 RBIs and 3 runs, Olivia Faggard was 8-for-17 with a double 6 RBIs and 5 runs, Chaney Peters was 7-for-19 with a home run, triple, 8 RBIs and 3 runs and Ryleigh Wood was 4-for-11 with an RBI and 5 runs.

Sara Phillips pitched 4 wins in 15 1/3 innings with 3 starts in 5 games, striking out 26 while allowing 10 hits and no earned runs.

Tucker pitched 2 wins in 9 innings with 2 starts, allowing 5 hits, an earned run and striking out 7 while Kate Hicks pitched 8 2/3 innings, picking up wins in 2 starts, allowing 4 hits and no earned runs and striking out 11.

SOFTBALL

CLASS 5A

Hayden (8-8) won 4 games last week, beating Appalachian 11-4, Locust Fork 6-1 and 18-0 and Susan Moore 18-1.

Jordan Plan pitched the win and was 2-for-3 against Appalachian while Gabby Knighten was 2-for-4, Allie Brown was 2-for-4 and Halie Pavolini was 2-for-3 with a solo home run.

Gracie Butler pitched the 6-1 win against Locust Fork and Plan pitched the 18-0 victory.

Hannah Davidson threw the win over Susan Moore while Kiley Weston was 2-for-2, Brown was 3-for-4, Chloe Watts was 2-for-3 and Gabby Knighten was 2-for-3.

BASEBALL

CLASS 7A

Fifth-ranked Spain Park (21-6) was 4-2 last week with wins over Prattville 10-0, Gadsden City 12-1, Lincoln County (Tenn.) 13-3 and Bingham (Utah) 14-4 and losses to Morton (Ill.) 9-4 and Auburn 5-4.

Matthew Widra was 5-for-9 with a home run, 6 RBIs and 6 runs for the week while Clay Spencer was 6-for-14 with a home run, 2 doubles and 5 RBIs, Cole Edwards was 6-for-14 with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs and 5 runs, Aiden Berke was 4-for-8 with a triple, 3 RBIS and 3 runs, Jacob Tobias was 5-for-12 with 2 doubles, 5 RBIs and 5 runs and James Battersby was 4-for-11 with a home run, 5 RBIs and 4 runs.

Lucas Thornton, Lucas Harvey, CJ Gross and John Robert Thompson all pitched wins. Thornton threw 6 innings with no runs and striking out 12 while Harvey pitched 4 innings with no runs and 4 strikeouts, Gross pitched 5 innings with 2 earned runs and 5 strikeouts and Thompson threw 5 innings with 2 earned runs and 5 strikeouts. Tobias pitched 5 1/3 innings with 3 earned runs and 6 strikeouts.

Eighth-ranked Hewitt Trussville (18-7) was 3-1 with wins over Normal West (Ill.) 14-4, Naperville (Ill.) 5-1 and Bradford (Tenn.) 14-2 and a loss to Hueytown 6-2.

Carson Wideman hit .500 with 2 doubles, a triple, 6 RBIs and 5 runs for the week while Grayson Pope hit .455 with a home run, triple, 5 RBIs and 6 runs.

Oak Mountain (12-12) was 2-2 with wins over Farragut (Tenn.) 7-2 and Shelby County 11-2 and losses to Houston (Tenn.) 3-2 and Moody 8-6.

Matt Heiberger struck out 10 in 3 2/3 innings, allowing only 1 hit against Farragut while Josh Hart was 6-for-12 for the week with 4 runs and 3 RBIs.

CLASS 6A

Seventh-ranked Hueytown (18-8) was 3-1 with wins over Beat Hewitt-Trussville 6-2, Bradford (Tenn.) 11-2 and G.W. Long 3-0 and a loss to Fairhope 1-0.

Daniel Watkins pitched a complete-game no-hitter against G.W. Long while John Michael Pickens struck out 7 in a complete game against Hewitt-Trussville and Aaron Wallace pitched a complete game with 7 strikeouts in the loss to Fairhope.

Sylas Amick hit a home run against G.W. Long and had 5 RBIs for the week.

Minor (19-4) won 4 games, beating Carver-Birmingham 16-2 and 10-9, West Point 13-11 and Meek 11-8.

Junior Tylan Amerson was 9-for-11 with 10 runs, 4 RBIs, 3 walks and 8 steals while senior Ashton Morgan was 4-for-10 with 3 runs, 7 RBIs, 2 walks, a steal and home run.

CLASS 5A

Sixth-ranked John Carroll (13-9) was 3-1 with wins over Bradford (Tenn.) 12-2, Boaz 7-1 and Spanish Fort 6-5 and a loss to Gulf Shores 8-0.

Seth Seidenfaden was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs against Bradford, William Gignilliat was 2-for-3 against Boaz, Max Plaia was 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs against Spanish Fort and Noah Smith was 1-for-2 with a double against Gulf Shores.
