Foley outlasts Davidson in wild shootout

Reece Tynes accounted for 4 touchdowns as Foley withstood a furious Davidson rally and clinched a Class 7A playoff berth with a 43-41 victory on Friday night at Ivan Jones Stadium.

The Lions (5-3, 4-1 7A, Region 1) can claim the region title outright with a win at home against rival Daphne next week. Davidson fell to 2-6, 0-5 despite a heroic effort from tailback DJ Butler.

Butler accounted for 6 Warriors touchdowns – 4 rushing, 1 receiving and 1 passing. He finished with 275 yards rushing and 304 yards of total offense. Head coach Rick Cauley called it the best individual effort he’s seen in his coaching career.

However, on this night, it wasn’t enough.

Tynes with 17-of-26 for 289 yards and 4 TDs. He also scored a rushing touchdown as the Lions racked up 535 yards of total offense. Harrison Knight had 176 yards and 3 TDs on 11 receptions.

Alabama junior WR commit Perry Thompson had just 18 yards on two receptions before leaving the game with an injury in the first quarter. Thompson said on his Twitter account he would be good to play next week.

Makai Mitchell had 4 receptions for 95 yards.

Kolton Nero rushed for 178 yards and 2 TDs on 22 carries for the Lions.
