St. Paul’s rallies to beat Blount

Drew Williamson dashed 60 yards for a touchdown midway the fourth quarter at E.E. Delaney Stadium on Friday night, delivering the decisive play in a 22-14 victory for St. Paul’s over Blount.

The victory moves St. Paul’s (4-4 overall, 4-2 in 6A, Region 1) closer to earning a playoff berth with two region games remaining.

Blount (2-6, 2-4) built a 14-7 lead with 7:59 remaining on Darryl Davis’s pick-6 interception and successful 2-point conversion pass from Myron Dunklin to Jayden Ford.

Williams answered on the Saints’ next offensive play, as he took the handoff and sprinted around the end for the 60-yard touchdown run.

“We put our heads together after they scored that touchdown and we knew we had to come back and do something,” said the 5-foot-10, 195-pound Williamson. “Everybody did their jobs on that play, and it happened.”

A defensive battle in the first half staked the Saints to 7-6 lead, with just Williamson’s 1-yard TD run, Drew Ginsberg’s PAT, and Blount’s Deshune Williams’ scoring run from a yard out accounting for the only points.

It stayed that way until the final period before Davis’s interception return, Williamson’s backbreaker. Chris Bracy added a 27-yard scoring run with only 2:23 to go.

Coachspeak: “Our defense really responded the last few drives of the game. Our first half, I really didn’t like the way we played, and Blount was able to kind of control the line of scrimmage. I challenged them at halftime to do better, do their jobs and do the things to help us win.” – St. Paul’s coach Ham Barnett

“We’ve got to control ourselves in the moment. The opportunity was there for us to win this game, but we just didn’t finish.” – Blount coach Josh Harris

What’s next?: St. Paul’s travels to Baldwin County next week, while Blount hosts McGill-Toolen.
