Brandon Miller not among finalists for Wooden Award as player of year

Departing Alabama star forward Brandon Miller was not among the five finalists announced Thursday evening for the John Wooden Award as the national player of the year.

The five finalists were Purdue’s Zach Edey, Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis, Kansas’ Jalen Wilson, Houston’s Marcus Sasser and Gonzaga’s Drew Timme.

However, Miller was named a Wooden Award All-American as one of the top 10 vote-getters for the award, along with the five finalists and UCLA’s Jaime Jaquez Jr., Penn State’s Jalen Pickett, Kentucky’s Oscar Tshiebwe and Arizona’s Azuolas Tubelis. Exact voting results, or the order of the top 10, was not released.

Miller was initially left off the 15-player Wooden Award ballot in early March before being added to the list a week later without any formal announcement. The Los Angeles Athletic Club, which organizes that award, did not respond to an AL.com request for comment about the decision.

Voting for the Wooden Award took place between March 13 and 20, and took into consideration the opening two rounds of the NCAA tournament. Miller shot 5-of-22 (22 percent) over the first two games of the tournament, including 2-of-9 from three-point range, after leading the SEC in scoring during the regular season.

The other criteria for the Wooden Award, from its website: “All balloted players have been certified by their university to meet or exceed the qualifications for the Wooden Award as set forth by Coach Wooden when the Award was established. The qualifications include: candidates must exhibit strength of character, both on and off the court; candidates must be full-time students in an accredited NCAA college or university; candidates must be making progress toward graduation and have a cumulative 2.00 grade point average since enrolling in their school; candidates must contribute to team effort; candidates must excel in both offense and defense; and candidates should be considered on their performance over the course of the entire season.”

No Alabama player has ever won the Wooden Award, which has been given since 1977.

Miller was among 10 semifinalists for the other major national player of the year honor, the Naismith Award. But he also did not make the cut to four finalists for that award, which is given by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Miller declared Thursday for the 2023 NBA draft, where he is currently projected as a top-three pick.
