NFL Draft 2023: Who will be the SEC’s first pick?
When Chicago held the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter seemed a potential selection for the Bears on April 27 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Had that happened, Georgia not only would have had back-to-back No. 1 picks, but also become the first SEC member since 1991 and 1992 to produce the first player chosen from the conference in consecutive drafts.

In the 2022 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars chose Georgia pass-rusher Travon Walker with the first selection.
But Chicago traded this year’s No. 1 pick to the Carolina Panthers, who will not be choosing a defensive lineman.
The Panthers traded up to select a quarterback, and it won’t be Georgia’s Stetson Bennett, but could be Alabama’s Bryce Young, which would mean for the 31st consecutive draft, no SEC member provided the first player picked from the conference in back-to-back years.
According to thelines.com, Young has the second-shortest odds to be the No. 1 selection in this year’s draft (behind Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud) and the shortest odds to be the second selection, a choice held by the Houston Texans.
The shortest odds for the third selection also belong to a Crimson Tide player, with outside linebacker Will Anderson Jr. considered the likely choice of the Arizona Cardinals.
Kentucky quarterback Will Levis and Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson also are listed as potential choices for the QB-hungry teams that hold the first two selections, but at much longer odds than Young.

If Young or Anderson becomes the first SEC player selected in the 2023 draft, he’d be the 15th from the Crimson Tide to hold that position and the first since defensive tackle Quinnen Williams went to the New York Jets at No. 3 in 2019.
The past three times that Alabama has produced the SEC’s first draft choice, the player was picked at No. 3, with offensive tackle Chris Samuels to the Washington Redskins in 2000 and running back Trent Richardson to the Cleveland Browns in 2012 preceding Williams.
The most recent consecutive drafts in which the first SEC selections came from the same program occurred in 1991 and 1992, with Tennessee offensive tackle Charles McRae joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 7 in 1991 and Volunteers cornerback Dale Carter joining the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 20 in 1992.
The latter pick is the longest that the SEC has waited to have a player selected, tied with the 1970 choice of Florida defensive back Steve Tannen by the Jets with the 20th pick.
