Gwyneth Paltrow trial ‘too white’ for Roy Wood Jr.
Roy Wood Jr. needed to “re-Black” himself after watching the Gwyneth Paltrow ski trial, or what he called “the whitest s–t I’ve ever heard” in a segment on “The Daily Show.”
In a video called “The Gwyneth Paltrow Trial Is Too White For Bailiff Roy,” the Alabama-raised comedian and “Daily Show” correspondent plays the “bailiff” in the trial, reacting to various moments between the “Shakespeare in Love” actress and an attorney. The YouTube video description reads, “Just another day for Bailiff Roy Wood Jr. as he oversees Gwyneth Paltrow’s trial, AKA the whitest s**t he’s ever seen.”
Per The Associated Press, attorneys are expected to rest their cases Thursday, sending the decision about 76-year-old retired optometrist Terry Sanderson’s lawsuit to an eight-member jury. The AP says Sanderson is suing Paltrow for more than $300,000, claiming the collision left him with four broken ribs and a concussion. She has countersued for a symbolic $1.
The trial over the 2016 ski collision at a Utah resort has drawn worldwide attention, spawned memes, and sparked debate about the burden and power of celebrity, the AP reports.
Comedy Central could not pass up the chance to give Wood a chance to join the fun.
“S–t, we in white people court. Let me straighten my back,” Wood says, as he improves his posture.
After a clip that shows Paltrow remarking the incident resulted in her losing “a half a day of skiing,” Wood chimes in. “A half a day of skiing? I ain’t never had a whole day of skiing. That’s what we’re here for?” he says. “Celebrities need their own court system, instead of wasting my time. I’ve got a murder-suicide at 2 o’clock. Come on, hurry it up!”
After another clip detailing Paltrow’s ski day outfit, Wood speaks into a cell phone. “Nah, the murder-suicide ain’t ‘til 2. These white people talkin’ ‘bout skiing.”
Wood finishes by closing his eyes, rubbing his temples and saying, “This is the whitest s–t I’ve ever heard. I’ve gotta watch all the Madea movies. I need to re-Black myself.”
Watch the segment in the video above (Warning: It features some profanity). A recurring “Daily Show” bit, Wood has played the “bailiff” in segments on Alex Jones and Kyle Rittenhouse.
After Trevor Noah’s exit, the satirical Emmy-winning show has employed guest hosts to fill in until Comedy Central finds a permanent replacement, including the likes of Leslie Jones, Sarah Silverman, John Leguizamo, Al Franken and the show’s correspondents. Wood will guest host the show April 3-6.
Wood is a comedian, writer, actor and producer who grew up in Birmingham where he emerged as a jokester making prank phone calls on radio station 95.7 JAMZ.
