Severe storms possible in Alabama starting Friday night
Alabama faces yet another round of strong to severe storms starting on Friday night.
All of the forms of severe weather will be on the table: tornadoes — including a strong one (EF-2+), damaging winds, hail and heavy rain.
Storms could develop along and ahead of a cold front. The are expected approach west Alabama on Friday night and track south and eastward across the state through the overnight hours.
The National Weather Service cautioned that the timing on Friday could change, but as of Thursday morning forecasters were expecting a line of storms to reach northwest Alabama around 11 p.m. Friday.
There is also a possibility that individual storms could also develop ahead of the main line earlier in the night and reach Alabama as soon as 9 p.m.
Here’s when storms could affect north and central Alabama, according to the weather service:
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is maintaining a Level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather for the northwest corner of Alabama.
A Level 3 risk means numerous severe storms will be possible.
A larger part of Alabama, including the rest of north Alabama as well as part of central and west Alabama, will have a Level 2 risk, which means scattered severe storms will be possible. Other parts of east and south Alabama will have a Level 1 risk and could see isolated severe storms.
The risk for isolated severe storms will continue into Saturday morning for the southeast corner of Alabama.
Here is Saturday’s severe weather outlook:
More strong to severe storms will be possible in parts of Alabama next week as well.
The Storm Prediction Center has the northwest corner of Alabama in yet another severe weather risk for Tuesday. However, the timing and the areas affected are likely to change ahead of next week’s system.
