Authorities recover vehicle that ended up in creek after chase with Decatur police

The vehicle submerged in a creek after it was involved in a chase with police Monday following a robbery in Decatur was recovered Wednesday, police said, as the search for one of the vehicle’s occupants continued.

Crews located and removed the vehicle from Flint Creek around 4 p.m. Wednesday, Decatur police said.

A suspect apprehended following the incident was charged Tuesday with capital murder in connection with the missing occupant.

Officers pursued the vehicle, which matched the description of the one used in the 1 p.m. Monday holdup of Mexican restaurant Casa Santiago on Spring Avenue.

The officers tried to stop the vehicle on U.S. 31 when the pursuit ensued.

The driver of the vehicle lost control, crossed over the median and eventually ran into Flint Creek near Bowels Bridge Road, submerging the vehicle.

One of the vehicle’s occupants swam across the creek to shore and was detained there.

A second person was last seen struggling to stay afloat downstream and went under before those on the scene could render aid. Authorities have not identified the person.

The captured suspect, 21-year-old Huntsville resident Ismael Tariq Smith, is being held in the Morgan County Jail without bond.
